DJ Hunter's Biography

DJ Hunter’s Biography

It was just an average day in the universe. Somewhere in a back country setting, a farmer rolled out of bed to start his daily work. People drove to work and dropped their kids off at school, daycare, etc. Computer programmers worked busily in their offices, some nervous about the concept of y2k. But, the events that took place in Lewiston, Maine on April 20, 1999 were what would change the world of many radio stations, inspire people, and make many a person laugh. Hunter J. Wilbur was born.

Christine Wilbur walked into Central Maine Medical Center accompanied by friends and family awaiting the arrival of her offspring. Little did they know back then, they were witnessing a big event: A radio DJ that would rock the airwaves in just a few years starting his life. His first hint of Planet Earth. First time he had ever seen a human being. It was all coming together, right then in that moment.

Just six short months later, it was noticed that Hunter would not respond to visual cues. Curious, Christine took him to an eye doctor. Tests later revealed that Hunter's optic nerve didn't develop, a condition known as Optic Nerve Hypoplasia. This left him completely blind since birth. This did not hold anybody in his life back, but rather gave them a fresh new approach to him. He was registered with the Division for the Blind and Catholic Charities Maine, and to this very day sees a team of professionals in the blindness field such as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired, who works with him by means of school purposes and an Orientation and Mobility instructor who shows him safe ways to travel and get around. This part of him never affected who he was, has been, and continues to be.

As Hunter grew up into a hardcore extrovert, it was obvious to many people that he would develop a music career. This was a guy who could identify any song within two or three bars. A guy who, as opposed to watching hours upon hours of the PBS Kids channel, would spend his time with a radio on to his favorite country and western station. A guy who got fascination out of the sounds that an Organ Piano made that his dad picked up. What shocked everybody was the young age which he had when he started to pursue it.

When he was 10, he started to get fascinated by radio DJ’s. He would listen to them and think of how awesome it would be to be like them. He would sit in his bedroom, which would later become a studio, and imitate the DJ’s he heard. It wasn't until 2010 when he visited a music festival put on by Q97.9, Top Forty radio station in Southern Maine when it struck him that this could be a career. Could he start with no college experience and be as good as them that's what he wondered? Turns out, he could.
